To evaluate the real-world performance of the
setup, testing was conducted in a two-bedroom apartment in Kowloon Bay. A
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 supporting Wi-Fi 7 was used to run Speedtest®
measurements in three different locations: the living room, a middle bedroom
and a bedroom located furthest from the router. The results show a clear
performance advantage for the Wi-Fi 7 setup across all three locations.

Living-room
test: download and upload speeds above 2,100Mbps
The first test was conducted approximately one
to two metres from the Wi-Fi 7 router in the living room, with no significant
physical obstruction between the router and the smartphone. The test recorded a
download speed of 2,148Mbps and an upload speed of 2,218Mbps. Ping latency
measured 7ms, while jitter measured 4ms.
For comparison, the dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router
tested in the same scenario recorded 808Mbps download and 603Mbps upload. Under
the tested conditions, the Wi-Fi 7 setup therefore allowed the Samsung Galaxy Z
Fold8 to achieve more than 2,100Mbps download and more than 2,200Mbps upload
speeds, with upload performance up to approximately three times the Wi-Fi 6
test result.
For households that regularly work with large
video files, cloud backups, creative assets or other data-intensive workloads,
upload performance can have a significant impact on productivity. Faster
uploads can help shorten the time required to transfer large files or
synchronise content with cloud platforms.
One wall away:
more than 1,700Mbps download in the middle bedroom
A router normally serves more than the room in
which it is installed, which makes performance behind walls particularly
important when assessing a home Wi-Fi setup. The second test was therefore
conducted in a middle bedroom separated from the router by one main wall.
Despite the obstruction, the Samsung Galaxy Z
Fold8 recorded a download speed of 1,748Mbps and an upload speed of 1,656Mbps.
Ping measured 5ms and jitter measured 1ms. By comparison, the tested Wi-Fi 6
router recorded 415Mbps download and 226Mbps upload in the same location. The
Wi-Fi 7 upload result was therefore up to approximately seven times higher than
the result recorded with the Wi-Fi 6 router in this test.
This level of wireless performance can be useful
for a household in which different rooms are regularly used for work, video
conferencing, cloud collaboration, streaming and entertainment. Instead of
requiring every user to remain close to the router, a properly planned Wi-Fi
environment can help extend high-speed connectivity further across the home.
Two walls away:
speeds up to 10× higher in the furthest bedroom
The most challenging test location was the
bedroom furthest from the router, with two walls separating the smartphone from
the Wi-Fi equipment. This type of location is where many households begin to
encounter noticeably weaker Wi-Fi performance.
Using the tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router, the Samsung
Galaxy Z Fold8 recorded 665Mbps download and 487Mbps upload. Ping measured 4ms
and jitter measured 0ms. In the corresponding Wi-Fi 6 router test, download and
upload speeds were 63Mbps and 45Mbps respectively.
Under these test conditions, both download and
upload speeds with the Wi-Fi 7 setup were up to approximately 10 times those
measured using the Wi-Fi 6 router. This result demonstrates why the most
meaningful home Wi-Fi benchmark is not always the maximum speed measured next
to the router. For many users, the more important question is whether a
connection remains fast and responsive in bedrooms, studies and other locations
where walls and distance can weaken wireless signals.
Router
placement matters as much as router specifications
Buying a more advanced router does not
automatically solve every home Wi-Fi problem. Where the router is installed can
make a major difference. Many routers are placed close to an existing broadband
connection point, often beside the television in the living room. While
convenient, this may not be the best position for distributing wireless signals
throughout the entire home.
Thick walls, large furniture, electrical
appliances and unusual apartment layouts can all affect Wi-Fi propagation.
Placing networking equipment inside a closed cabinet or at one extreme end of
the property can also reduce effective coverage.
